Well, after almost four months since the devastating fire at The Greens, our insurance company has finally accepted liability for the claim. The fire on the night of 2 March took us all by surprise and resulted in the immediate closure of the club. The investigation by the insurance company into the cause of the fire was then hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic that shut down the whole community and was then further delayed by the detection of asbestos in the ceiling cavity between the ground and the 1st floor of the Club.
As you can see from the photos, the damage is very extensive, and has rendered the club completely unsafe to enter.
Now that the claim has been accepted, our insurance company is in the process of removing all of the rubble from inside the club, which is at risk of having asbestos dust contamination. A very thorough removal process is currently underway, and we are advised that it may take up to seven weeks to complete the removal and treatment process. The air hygienist has advised that rigorous testing confirmed that no asbestos has been detected outside of the building, nor in the undamaged portions of the club. Once the debris has been treated and cleared and, the insurance assessors will be in a position to inspect the walls and roof to determine the extent of the damage and what we need to do to undertake a rebuilding process.
It is the intention of the Board and the Management team of Mingara Leisure Group, to work towards a temporary offering as soon as practically possible, however we expect this to take several months yet. At the same time, we will be working on preparations for the rebuilding project to once again, bring The Greens back to life!
With regard to bowls at The Greens, immediately after the fire, we took instant action to provide a safe place for our bowlers to store their bowls. It was our intention for bowls to continue on site however COVID-19 swiftly shut down those plans.
To their great credit, the Men's Bowling Club members willingly volunteered to maintain the bowling greens in the hope that at some time in the near future, bowls could recommence at the Club. Government guidelines now permit bowls and we look forward to welcoming the bowlers back to bowling greens immediately. A big thank you to those volunteers who generously gave their time to maintain the much loved bowling greens. Our expert greenkeepers, Green Options, are now back on the job.
